One of the world’s oldest and most primitive tribes, The San Bushmen of the Kalahari, have been eating the Hoodia plant for thousands of years, to stave off hunger during long hunting trips. San tribesmen feel Hoodia gave them abundant energy to hunt by day and, superhuman-like strength to make love all night long! It is also said to cure hangovers and upset stomachs too. When South African scientists were routinely testing it, they discovered the plant contained a previously unknown molecule, which has since been christened P57. Hoodia Gordonii And Its Affect on Metabolism
Sunday, November 8th, 2009
When most people talk about a metabolism increasing drug or supplement they are referring to a substance that stimulates the body to burn more calories. These metabolism stimulating supplements, such as caffeine, give us a boost of energy and a small increase in metabolic activity. On the other end of the weight loss and diet supplement spectrum is the appetite suppressant. Hoodia Gordonii, a cactus like plant from the South African Kalahari Desert, is the latest big thing in appetite suppressants. But the question remains is an appetite suppressant good for the body’s metabolism?
Up until recently Hoodia Gordonii was used almost exclusively by African Bushmen to help suppress their appetites during hunting trips that would last for several days. They had two reasons for doing this. One, they did not want to eat outside of the communal dining that is a staple of their culture and two, they wanted to make sure they didn’t eat what they hunted before they returned to the village. These tribal Bushmen have been using Hoodia Gordonii for hundreds of centuries with no known side effects. Of course they have been eating it for centuries and may have evolved an immunity to any side effects.
In studies that have been done to back up the anecdotal evidence supplied the Bushmen the appetite suppressing qualities of Hoodia Gordonii seem to be real. In one study obese individuals were given a set amount of Hoodia Gordonii everyday and were asked not to exercise. Over the course of the study the subjects taking the hoodia ate 1000 less calories per day then the control group that was taking placebos. This can be helpful for people who are obese or extremely overweight and have a hard time controlling their eating habits.
A potential problem exists though. Because the body’s metabolism requires a certain amount of calories to function per day anything that can result in fewer calories being ingested then are needed can cause the metabolism to actually slow down. For people who are trying to lose a few pounds taking Hoodia Gordonii could have the opposite effect of what they want. A slowing metabolism will actually cause the body to start hoarding its energy supplies and turning any excess calories directly into fat stores. The thing to remember is that cutting to many calories can be just as harmful as consuming to many calories.
The body’s metabolism will respond best to healthy nutrient dense foods. If one is taking Hoodia Gordonii it is wise to remember that just because you are not hungry doesn’t mean your body doesn’t need a steady supply of energy. Where it may work best for many people is to suppress the appetite enough to keep them from snacking all day on high sugar and empty calorie foods. This will require a conscious effort to eat healthy snacks and meals to actually increase the body’s metabolism for optimum fat loss.
Everything has its place and incorporating Hoodia Gordonii into a weight loss program can be beneficial if used correctly. The best way to lose weight is to eat a healthy diet and get regular exercise. This has the benefit of increasing the body’s metabolism which in turn burns fat. Using an appetite suppressant to help curb cravings can be a valuable part of a good weight loss regimen. But long-term fasting and severe caloric restriction can cause more harm than good. The body needs high octane energy to function correctly and eating healthy is the first step to increasing your metabolism and losing weight.

What brand of hoodia pills really works?
Sunday, November 8th, 2009I have tried a few and none of it have worked. Please if anyone have use hoodia tell me wich brand to follow.
There are brands that work, not many though. Everybody wants to knock hoodia off for a quick buck.
So do you really need it, Hoodia will keep you from being hungry and thirsty, but if your BMI is over 27 and you can remember to drink plenty of liquids hoodia is a good boost to your weight loss.
I would recommend UniqueHoodia, they are backed by a reputable brand name and if it doesnt work they offer a money back guarantee, and they dont have one of those autoship programs.
As people have said here a million times though your better off to do it with exercise and eating healthy, only take a diet pill if you need that extra help.
What is the correct way to use hoodia tablets?
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009I recently bought some hoodia tablets (please save the "Hoodia doesn’t work" comments) but I am unsure how to use them. Am I supposed to take them before a meal so I eat less or as a substitute for food when I am feeling hungry (so I end up not eating)? Or both/other? Thanks!
Hoodia is meant as a suppliment, not a substitute. If it is the hoodia gordonii 400mg capsules then take 1 or 2 a day with water approx 30 mins before meals. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day to see best results. Good luck hun x

The Real Truth About Hoodia Weight Loss Pills
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009
Hoodia weight loss pills are some of the most popular diet pills sold today, but do hoodia and weight loss go hand-in-hand? Despite the marketing hype and the promise by so many supplement companies that you’re guaranteed results, hoodia diet pills may not work as advertised.
First, let’s have a quick primer on what is hoodia and then we’ll discuss its role with weight loss. While commonly referred to as the hoodia cactus, it is technically a succulent. There are 13 varieties of the hoodia plant but only the hoodia gordonii variety has appetite suppressant qualities.
The hoodia gordonii plant is found in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. The San tribe, or also known as the Bushmen, have been eating the hoodia plant for centuries to stave off hunger during long hunting trips. They cut off a small piece of the plant, peel it, and then eat it raw. A small piece will suppress their appetite for hours.
Seeing the opportunity to capitalize on the obesity epidemic, companies began making hoodia diet pills and products that contain hoodia gordonii. The idea behind these products is obvious. By taking hoodia weight loss pills your appetite will be suppressed so you’ll eat less. The end result is that you’ll lose weight.
In theory that sounds wonderful, but it doesn’t always work that way. That is why hoodia and weight loss isn’t necessarily synonymous. For starters, not all hoodia weight loss pills are created equal. While there are a few honest companies who are producing and selling authentic hoodia gordonii diet pills, the majority are selling products with very little of it – if any at all. Without authentic hoodia gordonii, these products are worthless. You might as well flush your money down the toilet.
The reason there are so many scams out there is because hoodia gordonii is very scarce. It is only grown in South Africa and there are tight restrictions on the exportation of the plant. On the other hand, the demand for it is very high. This has led to a rapid increase in the price of hoodia gordonii. Not too long ago, a kilo was under $20. Today, a kilo sells for over $250. In an effort to maximize their profits, some unscrupulous companies knowingly dilute their products with other ingredients and fillers, or use a different variety of hoodia all together.
Other companies may not even know they’re selling fakes. Brokers are getting in on the action as well. They’ll dilute their own stock of hoodia gordonii or use a different variety of hoodia and then trick companies into believing they are buying the real thing for use in their supplements and products. Since hoodia supplements are unregulated, companies and consumers alike need to be aware of what they’re buying. So if you’ve tried hoodia weight loss pills in the past and they didn’t work, there is a good chance you weren’t getting authentic hoodia gordonii.
The other reason hoodia and weight loss don’t always go hand-in-hand is because some people aren’t getting enough hoodia gordonii to produce the appetite suppressing effects. Experts say that it could take as much as 3 grams or more per day of it to suppress appetite. The largest pill available that contains 100% authentic hoodia gordonii is only 750mg. You’d have to take 4 or more pills per day to reach that amount. If you were to take pills with less than that (which most do), then you could be looking at taking 8 or more pills per day!
Another reason hoodia and weight loss may not be synonymous is because dieters have unrealistic expectations of what Hoodia weight loss pills can do. They make the mistake of believing that all they have to do is pop some pills and the weight will disappear. If that were true, we wouldn’t be facing an obesity epidemic today. The reality is, hoodia diet pills only addresses one small piece of the weight loss puzzle – your appetite.
Hoodia supplements don’t change a bad diet, nor do they stop you from overeating. If you’re eating Big Macs and french fries all the time, or if you find yourself eating even when you’re not hungry, hoodia weight loss pills will do absolutely nothing for you. If this describes you, then save your money and instead invest it on a more comprehensive weight loss program that can address your diet and eating issues.
If you generally have a good diet and aren’t prone to overeating, then hoodia diet pills can play an effective role in helping you achieve your weight loss goals. Just don’t fall into the trap that a pill is the sole answer to weight loss. You still need to put in some effort. Also keep in mind that controlling your appetite and maintaining a healthy diet can only achieve so much. If you want optimum weight loss results, you really need to exercise on a regular basis as well.
